DALLAS, TX, April 26, 2022 – Flight Data Systems (FDS), a leading provider of flight data solutions for the rotorcraft, business, military, and commercial aviation segments, today announced the introduction of Flight Data Systems’ SAFR Readout services for cockpit voice and flight data recorders.

SAFR Readout is a state-of-the-art secure Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) data analysis service addressing the requirement for aircraft operators to perform periodic maintenance readouts on flight recorder systems at least once a year.

SAFR Readout analysis services cover FDR data, CVR data, serviceability checks, intelligibility checks, audio analysis, incident reports, and parameter correlation checks for all segments of aviation, including commercial, business, rotary-wing, and military aviation.

Flight Data Systems Launches FDAIU for Seamless Legacy Flight Data Recorder Retrofits

NEW ORLEANS, LA, March 28, 2022 – Flight Data Systems (FDS), a leading provider of flight data solutions for the rotorcraft, business, military, and commercial aviation segments, today announced the release of the Flight Data Acquisition Interface Unit (FDAIU). The FDAIU enables operators to upgrade legacy, outdated Flight Data Recorders (FDR) with Flight Data Systems’ SENTRY series of recorders and will be available for shipping in Q2 2022.

As finding functional spare parts or repair services for widely used legacy FDRs is becoming more challenging, global supply chains have moved to accelerate end-of-support for legacy ARINC 542A recorders such as the L3 Fairchild F1000 & F800 Flight Data Recorders. Replacing these obsolete FDRs with longer-term, future-proof solutions can be expensive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. With the FDAIU, upgrading to modern state-of-the-art flight data recorders is made easy with a remove-and-replace operation that can be completed in minimal time, reducing aircraft on ground (AOG) times, and maximizing aircraft availability.

The FDAIU is designed to adapt the SENTRY to fit seamlessly into existing FDR provisions with no modifications required on the aircraft. Preserving the existing ARINC 404A ½ ATR Long tray, connectors and wiring saves valuable time and labor while reducing upgrade costs.

Duncan Aviation Develops AML STC for Flight Data Recorder

LINCOLN, NEB., October 12, 2021 – Duncan Aviation is pleased to announce it is developing a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for Flight Data Recorders (FDRs) for numerous Hawker aircraft models. The STC will be the basis for an Approved Model List (AML) that will initially provide a certification path for Hawker owner/operators worldwide who need to install an FDR in order to operate in Mexican airspace or in airspace worldwide where FDRs are required, to meet the requirements of their Safety Management Systems (SMS) and/or to meet other industry standards.

The new STC is for Collins Aerospace Proline 21-equipped Hawker models 750, 800XP, 850XP, and 900XP. The STC also covers the installation of an AeroCorder 100 FDR from BendixKing and a Modular Acquisition Unit (MAU) and Quick Access Recorder (QAR) from Flight Data Systems.

The AML STC will meet the mandate established in 2020 by the Mexican Agencia Federal Aviacion Civil (AFAC) regarding the performance and functionality of Flight Data Recorders on aircraft flying in Mexican airspace. After gaining approval from the FAA and the AFAC, Duncan Aviation will seek approval for its STC from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).

The Duncan Aviation Satellite Shop in Houston, Texas, is installing the equipment for a Hawker 900XP customer who routinely flies in Mexican airspace.

“We want to be able to help those Hawker owner/operators worldwide whose aircraft are not equipped with FDRs or whose FDRs are obsolete,” says Manager of the Houston Satellite Shop Mark Winter. “Although the mandate went into effect in 2020, we’re just now seeing rules of engagement, and our STC addresses all of the issues. The Hawker series aircraft will be the first model to be added to this AML STC.”

The AeroCorder 100 FDR includes an ARINC 717 interface for data collection in today’s digital cockpits. To expand the AeroCorder 100’s capabilities, a Data Acquisition Module (DAM) is available from Flight Data Systems. The MAU converts the AeroCorder 100 into a Data Acquisition and Crash Recorder System.

Supporting a range of signal inputs, including digital, analog, and discrete, Flight Data Systems’ MAU allows multiple aircraft sensor feeds to be harmonized into one, which will be received by the BendixKing AeroCorder 100. Customizable and expandable, Flight Data Systems’ MAU can be installed in a variety of aircraft and can record additional parameters.

“Our customizable MAU offers a cost-effective means to fully conform to international regulations,” said Flight Data Systems Business Development Executive Scott Hall. “We are excited to work alongside Duncan Aviation to implement this solution onboard the Hawker, and, in time, to as many aircraft that require this solution.”

Flight Data Systems’ SENTRY Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder Gains STC through SKYTRAC for H145 Helicopters

DALLAS, TX., June 23, 2021 – Flight Data Systems (FDS), a leading provider of flight data solutions for the business, military, rotorcraft, and commercial aviation segments, today announced a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), gained through SKYTRAC, for the SENTRY Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder on a H145 twin-engine medium utility-transport helicopter. The STC will enable the installation of multiple variants of the TSO-certified SENTRY Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Recorder platform, the lightest and smallest ED-112 compliant recorder in its class.

The STC, performed on a H145 helicopter operated by STAT MedEvac, also includes the FDS Cockpit Control Unit and Cockpit Area Microphone, providing a seamless installation process for operators seeking to upgrade their onboard safety systems. The installation also includes the FDS Modular Acquisition Unit (MAU) for sensor data acquisition and parameter expansion, and Quick Access Recorder (QAR) for easy downloading for flight recorder data, ensuring maintenance crews can easily access data and configure the system for operator-specific profiles.

Available in titanium, the SENTRY meets or exceeds all requirements of ED-112A and qualifies for DO-160G environmental and power requirements. The rugged enclosure is ideal for airborne operational environments including unmanned, commercial, military, fixed-wing, and rotary-wing aircraft.

Hall says he was inspired to establish a career in aviation by his grandfather, who was US Navy aircraft electrician in the US Navy and later a salesman in the avionics industry. Throughout his career, he has followed his passion for avionic systems, and has acquired an extensive background in aircraft modifications and STC certifications.

David Mewbourne Appointed Flight Data Systems' Director of Engineering

MELBOURNE, AUS, December 1, 2020 – Flight Data Systems is pleased to announce the appointment of David Mewbourne as Director of Engineering effective December 1st, 2020. A seasoned professional known for generating profitable programs in aviation, Mewbourne brings over 27 years of engineering and program management experience to Flight Data Systems.

In his role, Mewbourne will direct the development of international embedded software and hardware programs from the company’s corporate offices in Irving, Texas.

From engineering and program management, to proposal and client support, Mewbourne has gained a reputation for generating profitable engineering programs for airlines and business jet segments.

Eager to take on a lead role in the development and program support of Flight Data Systems’ diverse products and solutions portfolio, Mewbourne will lead a team of application, electrical design, and system engineers to support the integration and installation certification of products across a variety of industry verticals.
