Summary:

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will develop and execute avionics embedded hardware. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of design, test, operation, and aircraft integration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop circuits, boards, and rugged electronic hardware assemblies across the entire product life cycle, including concept and requirements definition, design, prototyping, verification (power-on, functional / acceptance / qualification testing) and release to production
  • Develop analog, digital, and mixed-signal designs that interact with avionics systems, including analysis, schematic capture, layout, design review, test/verification, and qualification release.
  • Perform analog and power simulations
  • Support risk analyses, failure modes effects and criticality analyses (FMECA), Design For test/manufacture/cost (DFx), and root-cause analysis of product test and manufacturing discrepancies
  • Perform trade studies and selection of avionics components and systems
  • Develop avionics hardware requirements and interface control documents
  • Will work closely with Sr. Electrical Design Engineer and project management throughout the avionics hardware development lifecycle
  • Support peer reviews and milestone reviews including PDR, CDR, SDR etc.
  • Provide occasional assistance/guidance for service and support issues
  • Provide time and cost estimates for projects
  • Provide risk assessment and risk mitigation for technical and schedule issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years direct experience in electronics hardware development
  • Direct hands-on experience with analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, test, and debug
  • Experience designing circuits meeting DO-160 requirements
  • Familiarity with IPC 6xx (or similar) standards for highly critical class 3 board assemblies
  • FPGA development experience will be a plus
  • Knowledge of signal integrity, power, grounding, and general board layout principles
  • Exposure to analog and digital filters, signal conditioning and signal processing
  • Familiarity with amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters, power supplies, and analog circuits
  • Familiarity with general lab equipment (oscilloscope, DMM, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer) will be a plus
  • Highly organized team player with excellent technical communication skills (written and verbal)
  • U.S. citizen and U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder) required

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience using Altium Designer (or similar tools) to design complex aerospace boards; and experience working with external board manufacturing and assembly vendors
  • Some experience with scripting; programming and analysis/modeling tools: Python, Linux/Windows shell scripting; assembly language, C, C++; MATLAB / Simulink / SPICE (or similar).
  • Exposure to designing safety or mission critical aerospace flight hardware compliant with DO-254

Summary

The Senior FPGA Design Engineer is responsible for developing next generation avionics for the commercial aviation industry. The individual will be able to design, test, and integrate complex, high-speed FPGAs. This individual will work closely with hardware and software engineers during the test and integration phases. Additionally, they will be responsible for design, documentation, implementation, and testing verification.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Hardware and Software teams on FPGA system requirements
  • Working with Sr Hardware Engineers on overall system board design
  • Design of the FPGA subsystems for data transfer and data processing
  • Modeling of the ADC data processing utilizing FIR filters, CORDIC, Quadrature Down- Conversion, Reed-Solomon decoding.
  • Modeling of the DAC data processing utilizing I-Q Modulation, Reed-Solomon Encoding and IIR Filtering.
  • Selection and procurement for FPGA components
  • Assisting in the testing of high-performance FPGA-based boards and systems
  • Achieve company goals associated with cost, quality, and delivery schedule as related to the
  • assigned design activities.
  • Provide time and cost estimates for projects.
  • Provide risk assessment and risk mitigation for technical and schedule issues.
  • Make FPGA configuration changes to support customer specific installations.
  • Provide guidance to less experienced engineers.

Desired Qualifications:

  • BS or MS ins Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or related discipline
  • Minimum of 8 years FPGA design experience; within an aerospace company a plus
  • Demonstrated Experience with Intel Quartus Design Suite and Mentor Modelsim
  • Design experience using Intel Cyclone V FPGA families
  • Strong knowledge of FPGA tool flow; Synthesis, Partitioning, Place & Route, timing closure
  • Strengths in VHDL, Verilog, System Verilog, test-benches, simulation, automation, and debug are a plus.
  • Prior experience with lab equipment including meters, power supplies, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, signal generators.
  • Knowledge of RTCA DO-254 Standard for Airborne Electronic Systems is recommended
  • Generate block diagrams for various design concepts and circuit topologies
  • Analysis and Modeling Tools (MS Excel, Matlab)
  • Documentation Tools (MS Word/PowerPoint, Visio, Adobe)
  • Experienced in scripting/programming ideally Python, Tcl
  • Collaborate with other cross-functional team leads and engineers to plan and execute projects
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Excellent Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving skills

Scott Hall Appointed Flight Data Systems' Business Development Executive, Americas

Scott Hall set to lead Business Development in USA amidst the launch of SENTRY Series of Flight Recorders

MELBOURNE, AUS, January 20, 2021 – Flight Data Systems (FDS) Flight Data Systems hires Scott Hall as the new Business Development Executive for Americas.

Hall will be supporting FDS’s American business development efforts from Everett, Washington, USA, amidst the company’s 30th year of business. He says it’s an honor to join the operations and is excited to support the recent launch of the SENTRY Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which is the lightest, smallest, and lowest power consumption TSO’d ED-112A recorder ever manufactured.
